ACT! 2006 Tip

Today we worked on a customer’s PC that was having an issue withe getting thier ACT! for Workgroups 2006 launched from the desktop. This is an network enviorment with 10 computers on the network. All the computers access the same ACT! database located on the network server share. Each of the computers were accessing the DB just fine with the exception of this one paticular PC. We used our remote computer support mechanism and jumped on the user’s desktop to triage the issue. As it turns out, the issue was related to the Microsoft Windows XP firewall. Windows updates rolled out the night before and deployed SP 3 which turned on the firewall by default. This caused the ACT! client to stop talking to the DB even-though it could access the share just fine. So here is the tip…make sure your firewall is turned off when using ACT!.
